History
Congregation Bet Chaverim began when a group of families saw the need for a Jewish community
in western Wayne County. CBC became incorporated in June 1994. Monthly Shabbat dinners and holiday celebrations
were held. In the Fall of 1994, our first religious school class was held on Monday evening. Hebrew prayer reading
was all the curriculum was. In the Spring of 1995, CBC was invited to use the Cherry Hill United Methodist Church in
Canton for its monthly services.
Congregational members helped lead services. In the Fall of 1996,
our religious school expanded to the Gainsborough Clubhouse in Canton and added holiday celebrations and Jewish history
to its curriculum. Also at this time, Rabbi Gluck began working with the congregation. With the need for programming
for young children, CBC started a monthly Playgroup.
Our Religious School program relocated to the Northville
Montessori School and its meeting day changed to Sunday mornings. The Sunday school continues to meet on Sunday
mornings, but we have combined with Congregation Beit Kodesh to reach more of the Jewish Community in Western Wayne County.
In 1998, the youth group was started for teens and preteens. In 2000 we acquired a full size Torah. The first
draft of our website was put into play in late 2000, and continues to grow as a source of communication and resources for
our Congregation and the Community.
The Congregation has come a long way in a short time. The hard work of
many individuals has allowed the Congregation to flourish. In the next few years we will continue to provide many special
memories for all of the Congregants and the Community it serves.
